Ophthalmologist David Ming Pon, MD, in Leesburg, Florida, was found guilty of cheating Medicare and patients, by pretending to perform eye surgeries on people who actually never had the disease and didn’t need the procedures.
He lied to more than 500 Medicare patients that they had age-related wet macular degeneration. He then billed the government for laser photocoagulation that was never performed.
He used laser but purposely set the energy at such a low level that no leaky blood vessels were ever sealed and no “real” treatments were performed.
The scam netted Pon more than $7 million (according to the Department of Justice).
Moral: If you gut says this or that doc, or person, or employer is not good, take yourself – seriously.
