Berkson’s Blogs

One of my favorite times of day is sitting with my cup of Joe and looking over the science and pondering a blog and writing it. For me it’s a lot of fun wordsmithing together my life knowledge with what’s new. Having been in functional medicine, nutrition and practice now, yikes, for almost 43 years, I have a perspective that has, what we would say about a wine, ‘legs’.

Enjoy! Let me know what you think [email protected]

A WARNING: Don’t take NSAIDs during pregnancy!

2019-06-28T14:41:26-05:00

A WARNING: Don’t take NSAIDs during pregnancy! Or if you want to get pregnant! How often do you reach for a pill when you get muscle aches or a nagging headache? Are they NSAIDs such as ibuprofen that you feel pretty safe to take? NSAIDs are pain relievers that are sold over-the-counter and used by multiple millions. But do you know that NSAIDs have been clearly documented to block progesterone signaling? Healthy progesterone signaling is necessary for healthy ovulation. It’s now been shown that healthy pre-menopausal women who take NSAIDs for only 10 days, at the dosage recommended on [...]

10 Tips for Avoiding “Obesogens” and Keeping Weight Off

2019-06-28T14:41:31-05:00

Are Non-Organic Foods, Perfumes, & Everyday Chemicals Keeping You Fat? By Dr. Lindsey Berkson Worldwide obesity is an epidemic and a conundrum for adults and children of all ages. The commonly believed causes—eating more and moving less—don’t explain the entire epidemic or why losing weight today is much more difficult to achieve than it was in the 1980s.When I practiced with Dr. Block in Tulsa, an internist who had been in practice for over 50 years, I asked him what was the most common health issue he ran into over all those years. Without skipping a beat Dr. Block scratched his bald [...]

Your Son’s Brain & Emotions Are Under Toxic Attack

2019-06-28T14:41:31-05:00

(My Cul-de-Sac’s Sad but True Pyrethroid Story) by Dr. Lindsey Berkson I called my next-door neighbor in my tight neighborly cul-de-sac, Charette Cove North, to ask Beth for the name of their bug guy that she said used only natural products. Tall burly Gerald came over wearing a clean shirt that had printed over the chest pocket, “Natural Answers for Nasty Bugs.” What were these natural answers? Pyrethroids. Gerald explained these were safe natural versions of extracts of the Chrysanthemum plant’s own bug-fighting pyrethrins. The natural flower extract kills bugs, and Gerald proudly exclaimed that this version was completely natural, safe, [...]

Can Your Smart Phone and Social Media be Ruining Your Sex Life?

2019-06-28T14:41:32-05:00

(Why you should care and 3 actions steps to help yourself) By Berkson Just as we’re learning that satisfying and frequent sex is as beneficial for your health—especially your brain—as veggies and exercise, science is now showing that Americans are doing “it” less. I remember a line from the comedy “Bun Heads” where a dancer from the east coast is in L.A. trying to make it big. She’s on the phone with her friends back home, who ask, “What’s it like in L.A.?” She complains, “Nobody eats carbs any more!” Well, now there’s a similar trend with sex. Three [...]

Dear Friends, I am writing to you today about Dr. Gaby’s second edition of his book, Nutritional Medicine—by far the best compilation of scientific information on the use of nutrition in medical practices. It has just launched and you will want to have this book in your personal library to serve you and those you love. Dr. Gaby and I have been friends since 1977 when we were both students doing our first rotation in integrative medicine with Dr. Jonathan V. Wright, the father of bioidentical hormones. Dr. Wright was sure Alan and I were a match made in heaven, so [...]

The Lies of Type-2 Diabetes And The Power of NO FOOD

2019-02-13T10:56:41-06:00

Two Big Lies of Type-2 Diabetes And The Power of LESS FOOD By Berkson   Dear Friends, I just listened to an amazing YouTube video called, “The Two Big Lies of Type 2 Diabetes” by Dr. Jason Fung, a nephrologist (kidney doctor) from Canada. He has been reversing this disease, often very rapidly, within weeks or months, even in those who have had this disease for decades and are on multiple meds. In this blog, I am paraphrasing his talk in order to spread the word. I’ve been writing about the reversibility of Type-2 Diabetes for a few years now, but [...]

8 Ways To Reduce Your Risk of Breast Cancer Recurrence

2018-08-01T21:51:03-05:00

1. Blue foods. Blue pigmented foods like purple cabbage, purple carrots, purple cauliflower, radicchio, black rice, blueberries, blackberries, and more) are high in the anti-cancer pigment called anthocyanins. These have been repeated shown to kill ER+ breast cancer cells in laboratory studies. Colorful, diverse and filled with broccoli-family foods. A rainbow diet of diverse polyphenolic compounds, colorful pigments and brassica-type foods like broccoli sprouts, have all been shown to be cancer protective. Texting is the New Talking

2019-02-13T11:32:09-06:00

How to text without losing your ability to connect By Berkson   I remember a line from the comedy “Bun Heads” where a dancer from the east coast is in L.A. trying to “make it” and is on the phone with her friends back home. They ask, “What’s L.A. like?” She bemoans, “Nobody eats carbs any more!” It’s similar with conversations. Most of us don’t speak words anymore. We text. Texting is the new talking. We type. We send emails all day long. And in doing so, what is happening to good old “talking in the wild” human connection? Apparently a [...]

The Air You Breathe Is “On-Fire”

2020-02-25T12:59:16-06:00

5 Steps To Protect Yourself by Berkson The environment is now a major part of our health issues. To trek from doctor’s office to doctor’s office looking for solutions to your health problems, without addressing your environment, is sticking your head in the sand and could be preventing you from getting or staying well. Many of us live under urban “Pigpen” clouds. In the air, although you cannot see it, is a fine particulate matter that you inhale. That cloud of tiny particles hammers your respiratory health and adversely affects your intestinal lining and brain tissue. So part of being healthy, [...]
