Berkson’s Blogs

One of my favorite times of day is sitting with my cup of Joe and looking over the science and pondering a blog and writing it. For me it’s a lot of fun wordsmithing together my life knowledge with what’s new. Having been in functional medicine, nutrition and practice now, yikes, for almost 43 years, I have a perspective that has, what we would say about a wine, ‘legs’.

Should you be egg-o-phobic? By Berkson

2019-04-03T10:10:11-05:00

One egg per day was not linked to increased risk of poor heart health or stroke. This summary came from 8 articles with 17 reports looking at 3,081,269 person-years and 5,847 incident cases for coronary heart disease, and 4,148,095 person-years and 7,579 incident cases for stroke. Egg yokes are high in health fats that actually are good for making hormones and the skin surrounding all cells called membranes. British Medical Journal 2013 But certain individuals are atypically sensitive to saturated fats, or to the unique proteins found in eggs. So some of us are “sensitive” than others, to egg consumption. In gallbladder [...]

Five Ways Good Gut Bacteria Stay Good By Devaki Lindsey Berkson

2020-02-20T14:52:55-06:00

How do we tend the garden of our intestinal bugs so they stay healthy and thus so do we? Oxford University researchers have proposed a clever answer. They say that Mother Nature made good bacteria "sticky". This way they stick together deep inside your intestinal tract, and don’t wander across the gut wall or “get lost”. How does that happen? The immune system lives inside the gut “wall”. The gut immune system produces highly adhesive molecules. These are called immunoglobulins (specifically 'IgA'). These are antibodies that coat the bacteria inside your gut and in essence, purposely make the good gut bacteria [...]

Why Aren’t We Living These 4 Necessary Steps To Stay Healthy? By Berkson

2019-09-06T13:51:30-05:00

I have this cool couple that both came to see me as patients. They had lots of health issues. Good news is, that in the last several years, with getting their hormones balanced, their diets improved, and being encouraged and actually joining and using their gym, their lives have been turned around like someone flipped the ON light switch. So I asked, “Why hadn’t you done any of this before?” They looked at me like I asked them why they hadn’t they ever-tried Chinese food. Well, they said they just hadn’t heard about any of it. Folks. I am sorry. But [...]

Are your antidepressant or sleep meds eroding your bones? Or is one of them helping? Which are doing what?

2020-01-03T00:58:24-06:00

Yikes! Why doesn’t this make headline news? Canada has socialized medicine, so they have great records. Researchers identified women 50 years or older who had osteoporosis, and what prescription medications they had used in the years prior. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, atypical antipsychotics, and benzodiazepines were associated with higher risk of osteoporosis. Tricyclic antidepressants were associated with lower odds of osteoporosis. These drug effects were independent of mental illness diagnoses, including depression and schizophrenia. The authors from the Department of Psychiatry, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, concluded that some psychotropic medications are associated with an increased risk of bone loss, [...]

What drug are Americans clamoring to take, even though there are natural alternatives and hormone balancing to consider first?

2019-04-03T10:11:47-05:00

When I first started working at the Wiseman Family Practice clinic, I was shocked to hear from the doctors and nurse practitioners that about 70% of the patients were on prescribed antidepressants. One out of 10 Americans are on antidepressants. According to CDC statistics, antidepressant drug use rose nearly 400% since 1988. Antidepressants are the most frequently used medication by people aged 18-44. Antidepressants are the 3rd most prescribed meds and they usually cost more than most other medications. Americans heavily lean on antidepressants, but not just when they are clearly depressed. They are often given these scripts when they don’t [...]

Vitamin S in health care? What is it and why do you need to know about it?

2019-04-03T10:15:42-05:00

Medicine is tripping over itself trying to prove every drug and protocol by very well done, air tight, scientific testing, referred to as “evidence-based.” But it’s not so easy to really test what you think you are testing. Oh no. Look at what happened with the huge Women’s Health Initiative trial, set up by the government and multiple institutions to get evidence-based data on hormones and aging women. Many experts reanalyzing the data labeled it as a statistical fiasco. And after this fiasco, one of the icons of reproductive/gynecologic medicine, Dr. Leon Speroff, the physician and author who wrote the major [...]

Now we discover that the brain contains an amazing “thing.” If a portion of the brain is taken out and put in a petri dish, this “thing” stays alive!

2019-04-03T10:21:04-05:00

I have been talking for a while about the importance of brain/body cross-talk, especially to achieve extreme wellness in mid- to later life. Now we discover that the brain contains an amazing “thing.” If a portion of the brain is taken out and put in a petri dish, this “thing” stays alive! What is it, how is it important, and how do we keep it humming? The brain contains a region called the hypothalamus, which is the Greek word for “chamber.” In this brain chamber sit numerous nuclei, important clusters of neurons that act like control centers. These link cross-talk between [...]

Our lives are dictated more by smell than we realize, but once again, as I have been writing for years, shape is also part of the issue

2019-04-03T10:25:42-05:00

Our lives are dictated more by smell than we realize, but once again, as I have been writing for years, shape is also part of the issue. It now turns out that dancing is not just “with the stars,” but also “with our noses.” And a romantic partner’s shape is not only cool to look at, but also travels up our nose! I have been writing and lecturing for years that the essential, critical messages of life are delivered inside our bodies by shape-shifting. A hormone sends a message to a proteineous receptor, and together they “shape-shift.” Merged together, they form [...]

This research clearly demonstrates that modern fatness isn’t just a result of the ‘couch potato’ sedentary syndrome.

2019-04-03T10:27:34-05:00

This research clearly demonstrates that modern fatness isn’t just a result of the ‘couch potato’ sedentary syndrome. This data shows the POWER OF FOOD as tools to keep our waistlines from getting the better of us! Okay, okay, everyone knows that obesity is an epidemic worming its nasty way into every culture around the globe. Public health circles (or squares) have mostly thought, understandably, that our rotundonous ways are because modern peoples have become gluttonous sloths assuming the shapes of their couches. Move over Forest Gump; sedentary is as sedentary does. Even the World Health Organization says that we are fat [...]
