Heart Disease

Heart disease is the number one killer for both men and women. Often, we are told our only answer is medication, more medication…  and to avoid salt.

However, if you understand more about why your cardiovascular system is ill, for example if you have some faulty cardiac genes, or a chamber is faulty and causing “nocturnal” hypertension, then you often can fix it. Especially if you work with a doctor that understands the heart from these points of view.

Enter center stage. Dr. Mark Houston. Dr. Houston is renowned as the “iconic functional cardiologist” who put functional cardiology on the map.

Functional cardiology looks for “root causes” of hypertension and heart disease, such as the specific molecules that create heart damage. The patient is then guided toward making improvements in lifestyle, sleep, blood pressure throughout 24/hours, diet and medications to bring them back to heart health once again.

Dr. Houston created the only “functional cardiology certification course” for medical doctors taught at A4M, the Anti-Aging Certification Course.  He teaches all 24-hours himself. Dr. Houston has authored a number of textbooks for cardiologists as well as books for everyday patients.

The Hypertension Institute in Nashville, where Dr. Berkson goes for her look-see heart health exams is run by Dr. Houston. Dr. Houston is tripled boarded in hypertension as an American Society of Hypertension (ASH) specialist and Fellow of the American Society of Hypertension (FASH), Internal Medicine (ABIM) and Anti-aging medicine (ABAARM).

Nutrition is a subject taken seriously by Dr. Houston. He has a master’s degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut and a Master of Science degree in Functional and Metabolic Medicine from the University of South Florida in Tampa. Dr. Houston was an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

Dr. Houston has spent his life learning how to figure out the “root cause” of heart disease and high blood pressure and how to individualize natural answers to keep us living longer, healthier and on less medications.
